5 Family Friendly Puzzle Apps

By Jonathan Wylie

These addictive puzzle apps are a great form of family entertainment that can be enjoyed by everyone. So, why not gather the family and try one of these 21st century board games the next time you are looking for something fun to do together.

Cut the Rope – The premise is simple, but the execution less so. Your goal is to cut the ropes in order to feed candy to the baby monster. Sounds easy, right? Well, it starts off that way, but the complexity soon increases as you work your way through the mind-bending levels of this award-winning game. It is currently available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Angry Birds – If you’ve not heard of Angry Birds before, then it’s about time you came out from that rock you have been hiding under! This physics-based puzzler has become one of the best-selling apps ever. Your task? Exact revenge on the pigs who stole your eggs by catapulting your birds at a series of tower defenses that have been erected by the pigs. A sequel, Angry Birds Rio, is also available. Buy it for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices.

World of Goo – The World of Goo is a strange place indeed, but an ideal setting for some thought-provoking puzzle action. Your job is to save the goo balls by building bridge or tower- like structures for them to advance along towards the finish line. No two levels are the same and there are multiple ways to complete each stage. Try it and you will love it. This app is available for iPhone, iPod and iPod Touch users.

Jenga – You probably have Jenga tucked away somewhere in a closet at home. It is a family favorite that transcends generations and the digital version is just as good. Touch, tap and slide blocks out of the way as you try to avoid a complete collapse of your 3D tower and try the 4-player pass and play mode to involve as many people as possible in your game. Jenga is available for Android and Apple devices.

Slice It! – In this hands-on puzzle app, the object of the game is to slice a variety of shapes into equal portions by dragging your finger across the shape. It’s easy to do, but hard to master, especially when the shapes become increasingly complex. Slice It! comes with over 200 stages and is consistently rated at 5 stars by reviewers. If this game doesn’t get your brain thinking, not much will. It’s available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices.
